There’s never been a more exciting time to join our team: as well as being ambitious about making a difference in the lives of families in Stockport, we’re sharing best practice and driving innovation as an improvement partner to other local authorities.
Social workers in Stockport Family have a very important role to play that’s why we make sure they have access to the best support, development and training opportunities.
Stockport are proud that our social workers have been recognised by OFSTED (June 2017) as delivering highly effective support and services to children and families – they found that:

The role
When you join Stockport Family as a social worker, you will work with children throughout their time with statutory social care services. You will be working from the point of referral, through assessment, child in need/team around the child support, child protection, pre-proceedings and court work, children in care and adoption.   You will work with the child and their family throughout to the point they no longer require statutory social work services and step down/out is achieved.

Stockport family model
In Stockport we believe that relationships are key to service delivery that achieves successful outcomes which is why we do not hand on to a different social work team depending upon the point a child is at in services.  We aim for children and families to have just one social worker whilst they are in service.  We will support you developing these great working relationships by investing in your support, training and development.
Stockport Family is an integrated service.  We work using a restorative approach to support families to enable children and families to remain together wherever possible, and where this is not possible to ensure that children are safeguarded and able to achieve the very best outcomes. You will be passionate about relationship-based social work, proud of your profession and able to reflect and think creatively about how you can build relationships to make a difference with children and families.
You will work within a locality alongside colleagues from health and early years, as well as borough-wide specialist services so that you can access the support, and advice you need easily to deliver the best interventions for children and families, in a system where we share problems and look for solutions together rather than try to off-load them to others.
Alongside your allocated children you will also be the link social worker for specific schools within your locality and be a key member of the team around the school.  You will offer advice and support to professional colleagues that enables them to confidently support children and families to receive the early help and support they need with the aim of preventing the need to escalate to statutory social care services.
Stockport’s journey to integrate Stockport Family and education continues with the vision to deliver integrated services within communities where children live and learn.  Stockport were one of three authorities that took part in the What Works Centre ‘social workers in schools’ programme that was evaluated by Cardiff university.  You can read more about how Stockport social workers approached working in schools and the benefits of this here: https://whatworks-csc.org.uk/blog/social-workers-in-schools-results-and-whats-next/
